Frequently Asked Questions
Where is my data stored?
All your data is stored locally on your device using Apple's SwiftData framework. Nothing is uploaded to external servers. Your firearms info, range logs, ammo records, training courses, certifications, and photos stay on your device.
How do I move my data to another device?
Range Stats does not sync your data over iCloud or any other cloud service β all data stays on the device where it was entered. To move data to another device, use Settings > Export or Settings > Backup to create a backup file, transfer the file to the other device (AirDrop, email, Files, etc.), and import it from Settings on the new device. iOS-level device backups (encrypted iCloud Backup or an encrypted local backup via Finder) will also restore Range Stats data when you set up a new phone from that backup.
Will my data transfer to a new phone?
Yes β if you restore your new phone from an iCloud Backup or an encrypted local backup of your old device, your Range Stats data will transfer along with the rest of your apps. iOS handles this at the device level; Range Stats itself does not sync over the cloud. You can also manually move data by exporting a backup from the old device and importing it on the new one (Settings > Backup). We recommend creating a fresh backup before switching devices.
Note on older encrypted backups: backups encrypted by early versions of Range Stats used a weaker encryption format. They still restore normally, but the app will recommend creating a fresh encrypted backup afterward β do that, then delete the old file.
Does Range Stats work on iPad?
Yes. Range Stats is fully optimized for iPad with a sidebar navigation layout, multi-column Dashboard, side-by-side detail views, and keyboard shortcuts (βN for new items, βF to search, β1-5 to switch sections). It also supports trackpad and mouse with hover effects.
What is Range Stats Pro?
Range Stats Pro is a one-time $9.99 in-app purchase that unlocks advanced features including: unlimited firearms and trips, ammo and cost tracking, maintenance logging with push notifications, statistics and accuracy charts, CSV/JSON/PDF export, insurance documentation reports, accessories catalog, target photo storage and AI coaching, shareable firearm cards, sold firearms archive, and training and certification log. The free version includes up to 5 firearms, 5 trips, and the range finder.
Does Range Stats require an internet connection?
No. The app works fully offline. The only features that benefit from a connection are the map-based range finder (which loads map data) and the optional AI coaching feature. All other features work without internet.
How do I restore my purchase?
Go to Settings within the app and tap "Restore Purchases." This will re-activate Range Stats Pro using your Apple ID. Make sure you're signed in with the same Apple ID used for the original purchase.
What is the AI coaching feature?
Range Stats includes an optional AI-powered coaching feature that analyzes your target sessions and provides personalized feedback on your shooting technique, accuracy trends, and areas for improvement. It uses Google's Gemini AI and requires your own free Gemini API key (get one at ai.google.dev) β entered once in Settings > AI Coaching and stored securely in your device's Keychain. The app never ships with an embedded API key.
The first time you use this feature, the app will ask for your consent before sending any data to Google. Your session data is sent directly to Google for analysis β it never passes through Fourteener Labs servers. See our Privacy Policy for details. This feature is entirely optional β if you decline consent, all other app features remain fully available.
How do I generate an Insurance Documentation Report?
Range Stats Pro includes two levels of insurance documentation:
Per-firearm Insurance Card: Open any firearm's detail page and tap "Insurance Card." This generates a PDF showing the firearm's photo, make, model, caliber, serial number, purchase price, and purchase date β formatted for insurance documentation purposes.
Full Collection Report: Go to Settings > Export Data > Insurance Documentation Report. You can toggle which details to include (photos, serial numbers, purchase prices, accessories) before generating. The report includes a cover page, one page per firearm, and a summary table with total collection value including accessories.
Both outputs are generated as PDFs on your device and shared via the standard iOS share sheet. Serial numbers are included in these reports by default since they're intended for insurance record-keeping.
How do I change the app's appearance theme?
Go to Settings within the app and scroll to the Appearance section. You can choose from four themes:
Alpine Technical β the default theme with sage green accents on deep gunmetal surfaces.
Slate Obsidian Pro β teal/cyan accents on dark slate surfaces.
Zinc & Ember β warm peach/orange accents on charcoal surfaces.
Ironclad Tactical β muted steel blue accents on near-black surfaces.
Your theme selection is saved automatically and persists across app launches.
How do I edit or delete items in a list?
Swipe left on any item in a list (firearms, range trips, accessories, maintenance items, certifications, etc.) to reveal two action buttons:
Edit (pencil icon) β opens the edit form for that item, pre-populated with its current data. Make your changes and tap Save.
Delete (trash icon) β prompts a confirmation dialog before permanently deleting. All deletions require confirmation β nothing is deleted with a single swipe.
You can also tap any item to view its details, then tap the Edit button within the detail view.
How does Face ID unlock work?
If you enable the Face ID lock in Settings, the app will automatically prompt Face ID authentication each time you open the app or return to it from the background β no button tap required. The lock screen appears instantly, and Face ID triggers immediately without any interaction.
If Face ID fails or you decline the prompt, a manual "Unlock with Face ID" button remains on screen as a fallback.
Turning the lock off requires confirming your identity (Face ID or passcode) first β this prevents someone briefly holding your unlocked phone from disabling the protection. While the lock is enabled, a Lock Now button in Settings > Security lets you immediately re-lock the app without waiting to background it.
How do I track my CCW permit?
Go to the Training & Certs section from the sidebar menu, then tap the Certifications tab. Tap + to add a new certification and select "Concealed Carry Permit (CCW/CHL/CPL)" as the type. Enter your state, permit number, issue date, and expiration date. Enable reminders to get push notifications before your permit expires (configurable at 7, 14, 30, 60, or 90 days before expiration).
How do I share a firearm card?
Open any firearm's detail page and tap the Share Card button. You can generate a branded image or PDF showing the firearm's photo, specs, accessories, and value. The serial number is hidden by default on image cards for privacy (always included on PDF for documentation). Share via Messages, Mail, AirDrop, or save to your photo library.
Does Range Stats track my location?
No. The range finder uses your location in real time to show nearby ranges and center the map, but your location is never recorded, stored, or transmitted by the app. You can disable location access entirely in your device's Settings and still enter range locations manually.
The GPS coordinates of ranges you save are also excluded from data exports by default. If you want them included (for example, to move your range list to another tool), enable "Include Range GPS Coordinates" in the export options β the app will remind you the export file contains sensitive data.
Does the app strip GPS data from my photos?
Yes β and more than just GPS. When you import photos from your camera roll or capture them in-app, Range Stats strips all embedded photo metadata before saving the image: GPS coordinates, timestamps, camera make/model/serial information, and vendor-specific data (EXIF, TIFF, and IPTC dictionaries). Even if your camera tagged a photo with your location, none of that is retained in the stored image. This applies to all photos in the app β firearm photos, trip photos, and target images. Image orientation is preserved so photos display correctly.
Can others see my firearms data?
No. All data is stored on your device. There is no account system, no social features, and no way for Fourteener Labs or anyone else to access your data. If your device is protected with Face ID, Touch ID, or a passcode, your data is secured by iOS.
The app crashed β how do I send a report?
If Range Stats crashed during your last session, the app may present an optional prompt when you relaunch asking if you'd like to send a crash report. Tap "Send Report" and your Mail app will open with a pre-filled diagnostic email containing device model, iOS version, app version, and crash details β no personal data or firearm information is included. You can review the email before sending, or simply close it if you'd prefer not to send anything.
Crash reports are never sent automatically. All crash reporting in Range Stats is opt-in and user-initiated. You can also email us directly at support@fourteenerlabs.com with a description of what happened.
How do I delete my data?
You can delete individual records (firearms, trips, accessories, maintenance logs, target sessions, training courses, certifications, range reviews, photos) from within the app at any time by swiping left on any item and tapping Delete, then confirming. To remove all data, use "Delete All Data" in Settings or delete the app from your device.
Since no data is stored on Fourteener Labs servers, there is no cloud account or remote data to separately manage. For more details, see our Privacy Policy.
What iOS version is required?
Range Stats requires iOS 17 or later and runs on both iPhone and iPad.
I found a bug or have a feature request.
We'd love to hear from you! Email us at support@fourteenerlabs.com with a description of the issue or your idea. Screenshots are always helpful for bug reports. You can also use the in-app crash report prompt if you experienced a crash.
